Navigating the challenges of job hunting: Third-round interview insights and concerns

I had a third-round interview with a mid-sized logistics firm last Thursday, and I felt really positive about it. The hiring manager seemed impressed with my background, the team appeared to be a good fit, and the compensation discussions were in line with my expectations. However, I received an email from their HR coordinator the next morning that threw me off. She requested that I fill out a portal with four professional references, which seemed reasonable at first. But then I noticed that one of the required references was my current manager's phone number and corporate email. This was alarming because my current employer is unaware that I'm actively job hunting. I responded politely, explaining my situation and offered two previous directors and a senior client as alternatives. To my surprise, the HR coordinator replied just two hours later, stating that their internal compliance policy mandates that they speak to my current manager before they can even draft an offer letter. This feels completely unreasonable. They want me to approach my boss and reveal that I'm looking to leave, all for a position that I might not even get. If they choose someone else, I risk damaging my relationship with my current employer. I can't believe corporate recruiters often overlook the personal risks that job seekers face in this market. It's frustrating to think that they expect us to put our current jobs at risk for a potential opportunity.
