I recently experienced a layoff at my company, where I worked on a product that is being phased out. Two weeks ago, we were informed that our jobs would be eliminated, but there was a possibility that another company acquiring our business might hire some of us. Yesterday, during a team meeting, we learned that five out of twelve team members had received offers from the new company, while the remaining seven of us, including myself, are set to be laid off in January. What really upset me was the way the layoff was communicated. We were all notified at once in a meeting with our cameras on, in front of colleagues and managers who had already been hired by the new company. Our director, who was also hired, delivered the news while visibly emotional, which felt incredibly humiliating. I believe we deserved a more respectful, private conversation rather than being told in such a public manner. I’m grappling with whether I should address my feelings about this with my manager or director. Am I justified in feeling angry about how this was handled? I’ve received mixed feedback from others, with some suggesting I should just move on and focus on my job search instead.
