Navigating a Stressful Interview Experience at a Tech Company

I recently had a very unusual interview experience for a position I applied for at a tech company. It started off like any other interview, but things took a strange turn when I was asked, "Why should we hire you?" Just as I began to explain my relevant skills, the hiring manager cut me off, claiming that the skill I was discussing wasn't needed for the role. I tried to justify why I believed it was relevant, but the conversation quickly escalated into a debate rather than a typical Q&A format. Every point I made was challenged, making it hard for me to articulate my thoughts clearly. At one point, another interviewer mentioned they were assessing my thinking structure, which added to the pressure. The rest of the interview returned to a more standard format, but I couldn't shake the feeling that the earlier part was a deliberate stress test. Has anyone else gone through something like this? Did it affect your chances of landing the job?
