Exploring Severance Packages for Laid-Off Workers Over 50 Years Old

I recently got laid off from my job and I'm curious about severance packages for those of us over 50. I've heard that some companies offer enhanced severance to avoid age discrimination lawsuits, especially larger firms that can afford it. Personally, at age 53, I received six months of severance, but I have no idea how that compares to what others got since I lost contact with my former colleagues after leaving. I did receive a thick packet with information about the layoffs, showing salaries, ages, and job titles of those affected, which seemed to be their way of proving there was no ageism involved. However, I’ve also heard from others that companies often use algorithms to decide who gets laid off, which can unfairly target older employees who typically earn more. It seems like being over 50 is more of a liability nowadays. I didn't get any additional severance beyond the standard package, and they even included my remaining PTO in the total amount to make it look more substantial.
