Navigating workplace anxiety after recording a manager's inappropriate behavior

I recently found myself in a really tough situation at my job. I work in a company where I noticed a manager, who isn't my direct supervisor, being extremely rude and intimidating towards one of my coworkers. The manager has a reputation for being demanding, but lately, he escalated to yelling and cursing at my coworker in front of others, which made me uncomfortable. In a moment of concern for my coworker, I recorded the incident using my watch's voice memo app, thinking it might help him if he needed to report this behavior. I live in a one-party consent state, so I believed I was within my rights to record the conversation. However, I later learned that our employee handbook doesn’t mention anything about recording conversations, and I thought I was acting with good intentions. I shared the recording with my direct manager, who has always been supportive and protective of our team. I asked him to keep it discreet, but he ended up sending it to HR while claiming anonymity for us. Now, I’m terrified about the consequences. I’ve heard that HR is aware of the recording and has identified me and my coworker from our voices. Although my direct manager reassured me that he would protect me, I can’t shake the feeling that I might be seen as a liability for recording the incident. I know I didn’t break any laws, but I’m worried that the company might take disciplinary action against me since the manager’s behavior, while inappropriate, wasn’t technically harassment or discrimination. I’ve been advised by some colleagues to start polishing my resume, which has added to my anxiety. I feel stuck in a situation where I was trying to do the right thing, but now I’m left fearing for my job. I’m reaching out for any insights or advice on how to navigate this situation.
