At 22 years old, I’m nearing graduation with a creative writing degree and feeling the pressure to find a career path, particularly in technical writing or a similar field. My journey through college has been tumultuous; I initially started as a music major, switched to undecided, and eventually settled on creative writing, which felt like the safest option. Throughout this time, I struggled with mental health issues that made school incredibly challenging. I often felt lost and pressured to choose a career without a clear direction. Despite these challenges, I’ve made significant strides in improving my mental health and gaining relevant experience. In high school, my work experience was minimal, consisting mainly of short volunteer roles and a brief retail position. However, over the past year, I’ve actively sought out opportunities to build my resume. I volunteered for my school's literary magazine, providing critiques and proofreading submissions, which helped hone my editing skills. I also took on various editing projects, both paid and unpaid, including copyediting reports and presentations. I’ve been diligently applying for jobs and internships, continuously working on my resume and interviewing skills, and networking, although I haven’t had much success in that area yet. I’ve met with my career counselor multiple times to refine my job search strategies. I even landed an internship in public media relations, but the process was put on hold due to unforeseen circumstances. I’m still on the list of top candidates, so there’s hope for that opportunity in the future. I’ve recently discovered technical writing as a potential career path, which aligns with my skills and interests. While I lack direct experience in this field, my editing background and coursework have provided me with transferable skills. I’m taking online courses to learn more about technical writing and have narrowed my internship search to focus on editing and technical writing roles. Although I haven’t secured anything yet, I’m hopeful that my persistence will pay off.
