Disappointment in salary discussion after non-profit interview experience

I recently interviewed for a position at a non-profit organization where I previously interned. I really love the organization and its mission, but I was disappointed by the salary discussion. The job posting indicated a starting salary range of $40,000 to $50,000 per year, which I found appealing given my qualifications. However, during the interview, I learned that they only start new hires at $40,000. I felt taken aback because I am overqualified and could reasonably ask for the higher end of the range. It seems misleading to advertise a salary range when the actual starting point is at the lower end. After taxes, my take-home pay would be around $35,000, which is simply not sustainable in today's economy. Overall, I felt like my time was wasted.
