I've been struggling to find a job for a while now, and my finances are getting tight. I recently landed a small gig that provided some relief, but I'm really tired of getting rejection emails saying, "we decided to go with someone else." One major hurdle I'm facing is the requirement for five references. Since I've been jobless for a while, I don't have many professional contacts to rely on. My previous work environment was toxic, so I can't just ask former coworkers who might speak negatively about me. I also never really kept in touch with colleagues, as it felt awkward to do so.
