Today, I've been grappling with a tough decision regarding my beloved 14-year-old dog. After my garden leave ends, my financial situation will change drastically, as I will need to pay $1,700 a month in rent. My wife and I have the option to move in with my daughter and son-in-law rent-free, which would help us stretch my severance as I search for a new job in this challenging tech market. However, there's a significant hurdle: my son-in-law and grandson are both highly allergic to dogs. My dog has been my loyal companion, and I worry about how she would cope if I were to rehome her, especially since she gets very clingy when I'm not around. I briefly considered the idea of putting her down, but that feels completely wrong and I know my sister would disapprove. Rehoming her with my wife's parents is an option, but I’m concerned about the emotional impact on both my dog and myself. Long-term boarding is also an expensive alternative, almost as much as rent. I’m feeling overwhelmed and am reaching out for advice on what options I might have overlooked.
