Today, I'm reflecting on my current job situation. I'm 22 and working part-time in an independent field work position related to my biology career, specifically as a fisheries observer and catch monitor. The pay is $38/hour, but after taxes, it barely covers my bills, which total around $2,000 a month. The hours are completely unpredictable; I could work anywhere from 4 to 30 hours a week, and I don’t find out my schedule until the night before. This makes it impossible to take on another job, even though I recently got hired at a grocery store for just two days a week at $17/hour. It's frustrating because I need to support myself, my girlfriend, and even our pet iguana, and I’m also dealing with some debt. I signed a year contract that ends in May 2027, and while I want to honor it for the sake of my resume and future references, I’m worried I won’t be able to make ends meet. I’ve heard people terminate their first contracts without penalties, but I know it might not look great on paper. On a positive note, I have an interview lined up for a pest control position that pays between $70,000 and $80,000 a year with excellent benefits and PTO. It’s not related to my field, but it could really help me and my girlfriend out of this financial crisis. I also spoke to a senior employee at my current company who suggested a government position that involves catching wild salmon and collecting data. It pays $4,000 a month, but it’s over an hour away, and I’d need to pass a drug test, which is a concern since I recently quit smoking weed. Overall, I’m torn between staying in my current role for the experience and referrals or jumping into a higher-paying job that isn’t aligned with my career goals. I’m hoping to figure out the best path forward.
