I recently graduated with a degree in physics this past June and have been on the hunt for my first job. I was thrilled to get a phone interview for a receptionist position at a medical clinic, and it went well enough that they scheduled a second interview. I'm genuinely excited about this opportunity because I just want to start working and gain some experience. My sister, however, has been quite negative about it, insisting that a receptionist job is beneath me and that I won't gain any meaningful experience from it. She even questioned the legitimacy of the clinic, which I found baffling since it's a real medical facility with actual doctors. I understand that this role may not be glamorous or directly related to my degree, but I believe it can provide valuable skills like communication, customer service, and organizational experience. I’m not looking for my dream job right out of college; I just want to begin my career and learn how a workplace operates. While I appreciate her concern, I feel that I should be the one to decide what’s best for me. The salary they offered is decent for a starter position, and I believe I can use this job as a stepping stone to something more aligned with my career goals later on. I’m curious about others' opinions on whether a receptionist role is a reasonable first job for someone like me who is eager to start working.
