I’ve been working as a grocery store cashier for the past 5 months, and I’m really struggling with whether to stick it out for just one more month or to quit now. The lack of respect for my time is really frustrating. For instance, they send out a weekly schedule, but if I’m supposed to work from 8am to 6pm and they end up short-staffed, they’ll just make me stay until 8pm without even asking if I can. This has happened before, even when I was sick. It feels like my plans and personal time don’t matter at all to them. Additionally, the shifts can be brutal. They often schedule 12-hour shifts, and for those, we only get one 30-minute break. They don’t allow us to eat at the register, so that break is our only chance to eat. I’ve had days where I worked from 7am to 7pm, and they sent me on break at 11am, leaving me hungry for the rest of the day. It’s just a complete disregard for my basic needs. On top of that, one of my shift managers is really mean to me. Whenever I approach her, she acts annoyed and often criticizes me for no reason. The dilemma is that I’m starting a volunteer year in a month, and I’m worried that no one else will hire me for just that short period. I’m torn between quitting now for my mental health or sticking it out for one more month.
