Navigating Job Security Anxiety as an Engineering Consultant

I'm currently working as a consultant in engineering, and I've been feeling really paranoid about my job security lately. My team isn't hitting our targets, which has me worried about the possibility of layoffs. I know I might be overthinking things, but I can't help but feel like I'm not performing at my best compared to my colleagues. Today, I went into the office and it actually helped me focus better. I managed to complete several tasks, but I still can't shake the feeling of inadequacy. Interestingly, my manager mentioned that a colleague from another team praised my work, but instead of feeling reassured, I found myself doubting the validity of that praise. I can't help but wonder if it was just a way to soften the blow of potential bad news coming my way. Is it common for managers to give positive feedback while knowing that layoffs are on the horizon? Or am I just reading too much into things because of my anxiety about losing my job?
