Reflections on Isolation After Layoff and Lack of Support from Friends

I recently experienced a layoff and while I wasn't too upset about losing my job, I was really disappointed by the lack of support from friends and colleagues. It felt like no one reached out to check on me or even offered to share my job search posts. I was left feeling pretty isolated, and it made me wonder if this is a common issue these days. Is it just because so many people are being laid off, or is it something about the tech industry that makes people less empathetic? I remember a time when I helped a couple of friends land jobs that paid significantly more than what they were making. We were close, but after I was laid off, not a single one of them checked in on me for two years. When they finally did reach out, I was honest with them—I didn't need their support anymore. I realized that while family tends to be there for you, many so-called friends just move on with their lives, especially if you’re not in a 'winning' position. I've also noticed that some people I hardly knew offered me more help than those I expected would. It’s a strange dynamic. I’ve tried to be more proactive in supporting others, even those I don’t know personally, because I know how tough it can be. But it’s disheartening to see that many people won’t even respond to a LinkedIn message. It really feels like a 'man for himself' mentality out there.
