I wanted to share my experience regarding the impact of confidentiality agreements on job opportunities. Early in my career, I signed a confidentiality agreement with my employer that prohibited sharing client data, creative assets, and internal work outside the company. I took this agreement seriously and chose not to include any of that work in my portfolio when I left. Unfortunately, this decision has led to missed opportunities during my job search. In interviews, I often find myself explaining why my portfolio is lacking. Instead of understanding my commitment to ethics, many recruiters simply move on to candidates who can showcase their work. It raises a question for me: are we inadvertently punishing professionals for adhering to the very agreements that companies require? While I recognize the importance of a strong portfolio, I believe integrity should also be valued in the hiring process. I wonder how hiring managers evaluate candidates like me who can't share their previous work due to confidentiality. It would be great to see more emphasis on case studies, technical discussions, or problem-solving abilities as alternatives to traditional portfolios.
