I recently found myself without a job after nearly a decade of working in the family business. I started as a manager at a truck accessories and spray-on bedliner company, leaving a corporate job that was undergoing massive layoffs. Initially, my father-in-law matched my salary, and I eventually earned around $86,000 a year as the general manager. However, after about eight years, he decided to sell the business. There was some talk of selling it to me, but a buyer with deeper pockets came in instead. I then worked for the new owner for about six months before my father-in-law recruited me to join his new franchise vehicle repair business, again matching my salary. Unfortunately, after nine months, it became clear that this new venture was not sustainable, and he had to close it down. Now, my family and I are in a tough spot. I have some savings and a moderate retirement account, but it won’t last forever. To add to the stress, I had brain surgery in 2020 and another surgery to remove a tumor earlier this year in March. I have monthly treatments and periodic MRIs, and my father-in-law was very accommodating with my schedule during my time there. I’m struggling to find a job that allows me to keep up with my medical appointments while also providing a salary close to what I was making before. The job market feels saturated, and I’m considering remote operations or service manager roles, possibly with auto parts chains, but it's tough out there.
