Navigating uncertainty after interviews at a large bank and waiting for next steps

I recently interviewed for a position at a large bank, first with an analyst and then with a senior leader. A few days after the interview, the senior leader reached out via email, expressing that they enjoyed our conversation and would follow up with next steps. However, I was informed early in the process that the role might not be filled until next year, which leaves me uncertain about how soon I might hear back. I've already checked in with the recruiting team for updates. With the holidays approaching, I'm wondering how long I should wait before following up again. Is the phrase "will follow up with next steps" typically a positive sign? Any advice would be appreciated!
