I am currently working as a project manager at a small tech company, and things have taken a really stressful turn. We've been dealing with a significant issue involving a high-profile client for almost two weeks now, which has created a lot of pressure from upper management. Just two days ago, my team and I were informed about the situation and we jumped right in to help with the root cause analysis and problem resolution. However, my director has been absent during this crisis and called a meeting this morning to discuss how to fix the problems quickly, seemingly to protect his own job. He insisted that one person should handle everything related to the client, including basic troubleshooting tasks that could easily be managed by someone in the help desk. I had assigned one of our developers to focus on the primary issues, but my director wanted him to take on all related tickets, which I felt was an inappropriate use of resources. When I pushed back, explaining that it wasn't feasible for him to manage both complex issues and basic troubleshooting, my director lost his temper and yelled at me in front of everyone. It was humiliating and made me question my job security. After the meeting, I broke down in front of my team, which was really embarrassing. I had to take an early lunch to collect myself, but the hostility from my director continued when I returned. This isn't the first time I've faced hostility at work; I've had multiple confrontations with coworkers recently, including an engineer who slammed things in frustration and an account manager who questioned my ability to do my job. I've brought these issues up to my manager, but it feels like I'm always expected to improve and handle these conflicts on my own. Now I'm really worried about my job security and whether I'm being unfairly blamed for standing up for my team. I know I could have been more assertive with my director, but I also believe in maintaining boundaries for myself and my team. I’m feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to navigate this situation.
