I'm currently working a low-paying job at a rapid rehousing program that helped my family transition out of homelessness earlier this year. I'm in my late twenties and earning $11/hour, which is crucial for our financial situation. However, I've been feeling increasingly uncomfortable due to the behavior of an older man who also works there. He has made inappropriate advances, like asking for my phone number, and during a ride to work arranged by our case manager, he deviated from the GPS directions and stared at me, making me feel unsafe. I ended up calling our case manager to feel secure during the ride. When I shared my concerns with my case manager, they were supportive, but my mother thinks I'm overreacting. She believes I should toughen up and focus on the financial benefits of the job, especially since my brother has a higher-paying job and our family receives benefits. While I understand the importance of contributing to our household, I also feel that working alongside someone who makes me uncomfortable is not worth it. I lack the customer service skills needed for this position, and I genuinely don't want to stay in an environment where I feel unsafe. The problem is, this is currently the only job opportunity available to me through the program, and finding another job won't be easy. So, I'm grappling with whether it's unreasonable to want to quit under these circumstances. Is feeling unsafe at work a valid reason to leave, or am I being too sensitive as my mother suggests?
