I’m currently a delivery driver at a pizza chain, trying to make it through college while pursuing a career as a radiology technician. I’ve been close friends with my manager, who was recently promoted, for about two years. I’ve always been a dedicated worker, previously working as a CNA for four years, and I’ve never received complaints about my performance. Recently, I got really sick starting on the 24th of last month and missed a few shifts. I was diagnosed with CHS and later caught a viral infection, which led to multiple urgent care and ER visits. I was unable to keep food down for weeks and had to leave work early on one occasion. Despite my health struggles, I showed up for most of my shifts, even going to work straight from the ER. However, I heard from a coworker that my manager has been talking badly about me and considering firing me after I missed a shift without coverage. He has since cut my hours in half and has been difficult about my PTO, despite my doctor’s note allowing me to return to work. I’m worried about getting fired, not being able to use my PTO, and losing my insurance due to reduced hours. To prepare for the worst, I’ve applied for 13 jobs in the medical field and updated my resume. I’m planning to speak with the district manager tomorrow to discuss my PTO and see if he can be a reference for me. I’m not going to mention my manager's behavior; instead, I’ll frame my departure as a move towards my career in healthcare. I’m trying to ensure I don’t have a gap in employment and am committed to continuing to show up at my current job until I secure a new position. I’m feeling low after losing a friend in my manager and the comfort of my job, but I’m hopeful about transitioning back into the medical field. I just want to make sure I’m covering all my bases and preserving my well-being during this tough time.
