Interviewed for Field Service Engineer Role After Multiple Applications and a Referral

I recently had an interview for a Field Service Engineer position at a company I've been trying to get into for a while. After submitting about seven applications that seemed to get lost in the portal, I finally got a chance to interview thanks to a referral link from a friend. I had a phone screening with the recruiter about a week after applying, followed by a dual-round interview just a couple of days later. The interview process moved quickly, which I suspect was due to the referral. Currently, they are still interviewing other candidates, but I feel optimistic about my chances. The interview caught me off guard with a few tough questions, but I managed to hit on a lot of the key points they were looking for. The first round lasted an hour and included the hiring manager and senior managers, while the second round was an hour later with the supervisor and several senior engineers. I really connected with the supervisor, even reminiscing about working at movie theaters, which made the atmosphere more relaxed. I've heard that building rapport with management can increase your chances of moving forward in the hiring process, so I hope that helps my case. It's been a tough job market since I graduated with my B.S. in Biochemistry in December 2025. I've only had two interviews despite submitting over 100 applications and attending numerous career fairs. I wanted to share my experience to encourage others who are job hunting to keep pushing through and look for the positives in this challenging economy. I'd love to hear about other people's referral successes, interview experiences, and job offers!
