Reflecting on a painful layoff after 13 years of dedication and betrayal

I was unexpectedly laid off last week after dedicating over 13 years to my company, where I had worked my way up from a temp role to a senior manager position. During the call with my (now ex) manager, it was suggested that my role was being eliminated due to a lack of work and that I wasn't justifying my title and salary. It stung to hear this, especially since I was the only one being let go. Initially, the layoff was set to take effect immediately, which would have left me without health insurance coverage just days before it ended. Given my medical issues, I was understandably distressed. Thankfully, I managed to negotiate a paid leave of absence until the end of November, which at least allows me to keep my insurance for a little longer. The call was emotional for me, and I didn’t hold back my feelings. I confronted my ex-manager about why he never raised any concerns with me during our years of working together, especially since he had always positioned himself as a friend. It felt like a betrayal, particularly since I had confided in him about my struggles and he had reassured me all along, even as he was planning my termination. Reflecting on my time at the company, I realize how much I had invested. I started as a temp in my early 20s, expecting to be there for only a few weeks, and instead built a career. I had formed close relationships with senior leadership and even shared personal moments with our CEO. I believed I was secure in my position, but it turns out that trust was misplaced. What really hurts is the timing of the layoff—on a random Tuesday, just three days before a bonus payout, and the meager severance package offered after so many years of service. To add insult to injury, an associate-level position was posted in my former department on the same day I was informed of my layoff. It felt like a slap in the face when my ex-manager texted me afterward, claiming he cared about me. On the brighter side, I’ve been overwhelmed by the support from my community, which has been a source of comfort during this tough time. Plus, I’m relieved to be free from a job that has been making me miserable for years!
