I just received the heartbreaking news that my dad passed away. After getting off work today, I rushed to my parents' house to be with my family, who were understandably devastated. I had to inform my employer that I couldn't come in after this loss. My boss was sympathetic, but the company policy only allows for three days of bereavement leave. This means I get Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday off, but if I need Friday, I have to use my PTO. It feels so inadequate to only have a few days to grieve such a significant loss. I rely on my job, and so does my family, but it's hard to focus on work when I'm going through this. I just wish companies would recognize the emotional toll of losing a parent and allow more time to heal.
