Navigating the emotional impact of losing my flexible remote job

I just got laid off from my dream job, and I'm really struggling with the transition. I had this perfect flexible role where I could work from home, set my own hours, and even sleep in until 9 AM. The company was based in Beijing and Shanghai, but I was the only one working from a smaller city near my hometown. It felt like remote work without the downsides—no strict clock-in requirements and a decent salary that covered my living expenses. After nearly two years of that freedom, getting laid off on a Monday morning hit me hard. Now, I'm facing the reality of a tough job market here. I can hardly find anything decent, and the thought of moving to a bigger city like Shenzhen is daunting. I know my friends there love it, but I can't shake the anxiety about high rent, long commutes, and cramped living spaces. Plus, many jobs in those cities come with the usual downsides: unpaid overtime, stressful environments, and unfriendly coworkers. The hardest part is mentally adjusting. After experiencing a job that was low stress and flexible, it's tough to think about settling for something worse. I know what a good work-life balance looks like, and I don't want to compromise that.
