I've been on quite the rollercoaster with my job search lately. This is my third time interviewing with a top company in my area, and I've made it to the final round twice now. The competition is fierce since it's a cool brand in a niche industry, and there aren't many roles available. The last time I interviewed, the HR recruiter mentioned that the position was too junior for my experience, suggesting I come back for something more senior. This time, I felt the role was a much better fit for my background, so I applied again. I had a lot of support this time around, with multiple industry contacts referring me and putting in good words. The interview process went smoothly: I had a recruiter screen, met with the hiring manager, spoke with the director, and then participated in a full onsite panel. I was told I would likely hear back by Monday, and I knew it was down to me and one other candidate. However, Monday came and went without any news, which left me feeling anxious. To complicate things, someone on the team who reports to one of my interviewers is in my extended friend group. We aren't close, and she's always been a bit cold toward me. Before the onsite, she provided some helpful insights and mentioned she spoke to two of the interviewers about me, but I have no idea what she actually said or if she would even want to work with me. Now I'm left wondering what could be happening behind the scenes. Are they waiting on approvals? Are they holding off while the other candidate decides? Or have they already moved on? Could her lukewarm impression of me impact my chances, even unintentionally? How much weight does a coworker's input carry when they only know the candidate socially? I'm trying to figure out if I'm just overthinking this delay or if there's something more to it.
