Navigating a Job Offer Dilemma for an Administrative Position at a Non-Profit

I recently received a job offer from a local non-profit for an administrative position, and I was initially thrilled about the opportunity to leave my current role as a substitute teacher. Working in education has become increasingly toxic for me, and I only make $155 a day, so I was eager for a change. However, my excitement quickly turned to concern when they informed me that I would need to pay for my own background check, fingerprints, and a physical exam, all of which they said they would reimburse but without any written guarantee. When I followed up to understand why these costs were required upfront before I even signed a contract, they told me it was mandated by the state. I decided to check with the state myself, and they confirmed that as an administrative employee, I shouldn't need to go through all these procedures. This has raised a red flag for me, and I'm worried that this might be a bait and switch tactic to push me into a classroom role rather than keeping me in the office. I'm feeling stuck and unsure about whether I should press the issue or just walk away from the offer altogether, fearing they might rescind it if I question their requirements. It just feels off, and I could really use some advice.
