Navigating salary discussions after sharing an external job offer range

I recently had a conversation with my current employer about my salary after receiving an external job offer. They asked me to provide a salary range for the offer, and I mentioned it was in the £50k range without disclosing the exact amount. My current salary is in the low £30k range, so it felt like a significant jump. They wanted to benchmark salaries to see if they could improve pay across the board and understand market trends. However, I’m now second-guessing my decision to share that information. It feels a bit uncomfortable, and I’m wondering if I should have kept that to myself. Some people have reassured me that it’s a common practice, but I still feel a bit uneasy about it.
