I’m currently on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) at my job, which is set to conclude in a little over two weeks. I’ve been actively interviewing with five different companies and am in the final stages of the process. I’m considering quitting my current job this week because I feel confident I’ll receive at least one job offer soon. However, I’m worried about my unused Paid Time Off (PTO). My company’s employee handbook only mentions that unused PTO is paid out to employees who are terminated or retire, but it doesn’t specify anything about those who quit. I have 25 days of PTO saved up, and I was counting on that payout to support me during my job search. I also intended to offer to work for an additional two weeks to ease the transition, but I’m unsure if they would pay me for that time if I don’t get approval. Given my lack of motivation and focus on my interviews, I’m concerned that my employer might fire me before I have a chance to resign. I’ve read that in New York, there’s no law requiring companies to pay out unused PTO if an employee quits, which adds to my anxiety. I’m looking for advice on whether I should go ahead and quit or if I should stick it out until the PIP concludes. I’ve heard mixed opinions on whether it’s common for companies to pay out PTO for resignations, so I’m really in a bind.
