I recently faced a significant decision after receiving two job offers, which is a big step for me after struggling to find work for over a year following massive layoffs at my previous company. I currently earn $80k, but my budget is tight living in a high cost of living area in Southern California. The first opportunity is with a long-standing corporate institution offering $100k. The vibe during the interviews was great, and the role is fully remote with a clear path to promotions and leadership. However, the benefits aren't fantastic, and I feel slightly overqualified. It’s a standard 9-5, which is comfortable for me. The second opportunity is with a smaller company in a startup phase, offering $135k with decent benefits. This role requires being fully in-office, which means a commute of 30 minutes to over an hour each way. While the compensation is attractive, I have some imposter syndrome about the role being a challenge, and I’d be expected to participate in after-hours events and community presence. Currently, I’m hybrid, which I enjoy, but I worry that without in-person interaction, I might feel withdrawn. Plus, going from a 5-minute commute to over an hour seems daunting. I’ve also received feedback that my job history, with three positions in the last five years, might be seen as risky, so I want to make sure I choose the right fit. I know sometimes you have to take a leap of faith, but I’m looking for thoughts and advice on which opportunity might be the better choice.
