I just completed my first day at a law firm, and I’m already questioning whether I should quit. The firm turned out to be a collection of individual lawyer offices, which was not what I expected. My commute is about an hour each way, requiring me to wake up at 5:30 AM to catch the 6:15 train, followed by a bus ride, just to arrive by 8 AM. I’m doing billing, filling the on-site café, and other tasks until 5 PM, which means I don’t get home until at least 7 PM. While the benefits are decent, I’m young and don’t really need them right now. I was given a laptop but have no desk to use it or store my belongings, as they told me I wouldn’t have a dedicated space. Communication has been poor, even during the interview process. I was excited about working at a law firm, thinking it would be a valuable experience for law school, especially since I’m interested in family law. However, I’ve learned that I won’t actually be working with attorneys as I thought; instead, I’ll just be forwarding emails and sending out mail, which is disappointing. Now, I’m realizing that the long commute and the loss of sleep, gym time, therapy, and LSAT study time may not be worth it. I even have another job offer that’s closer to home, and I’m seriously reconsidering my options. I know I should have been more cautious, but I was convinced by the interview. To make matters worse, a coworker just used a slur in the office. I’m feeling overwhelmed and unsure about what to do next.
