I recently landed a higher paying job after being laid off! I worked at a reputable company for 4.5 years until I was laid off at the end of June due to a company-wide reduction in force (RIF) linked to decreased consumer spending. Experiencing this firsthand was a jarring reminder that all the late nights and hard work don't matter unless you have a close relationship with upper management. I spent 4 months unemployed, attending three job fairs and four online events. I had a few final round interviews, but unfortunately, none resulted in offers. Then, out of the blue, a recruiter contacted me about a different role. After going through four interviews, including a grueling 5-hour onsite, I finally received an offer with a salary that is 30% higher than what I was making before! My advice for anyone in a similar situation is to identify your strengths and target roles that align with them. It’s crucial to tailor your resume and have a convincing narrative for why you're transitioning between domains. For instance, I shifted from the telecom industry to a pure software engineering role, which is where the money is. To prepare, I dedicated the last two months to practicing leetcode, system design, and behavioral interview questions. I also highlighted my unique background in networking, which I believe set me apart from other candidates. On a personal note, being unemployed was quite humiliating. At the in-person job fairs, I felt a mix of embarrassment and powerlessness, as if we were all just begging for jobs. Now, with my new salary, I plan to accelerate my journey towards financial independence.
