Navigating Job Offers: Rescinding a Temp-to-Perm Role for a Better Opportunity

I have been job searching for a full-time role for the past 30 days and I recently received two job offers. The first offer is a temp-to-perm position through a recruiter, but I have noticed several red flags that make me hesitant to accept it. The recruiter has been incredibly kind, especially considering I just went through a death in my family; she even pushed back my start date and offered her condolences. However, the offer itself has some serious concerns. The pay is lower, there are no health benefits during the temp period, and I have no details about the permanent salary or benefits. Additionally, while it was pitched as a remote role, I’ve now been told that I will need to be in the office indefinitely for training, which requires formal business attire that I can't currently afford. The role involves supporting remote staff through a failed ERP rollout, but I won’t be able to make any process recommendations, which feels frustrating. The second offer, which I am still waiting on a final reference check for, is a direct hire position that pays $40k more than the first offer and is fully remote, with only annual travel to headquarters. This role aligns better with my career goals, but I do have concerns about the vague day-to-day expectations and my unfamiliarity with their ERP and revenue model. Now, I’m in a bit of a dilemma. I need advice on how to professionally rescind the first offer without burning bridges with the recruiter, especially since I’m supposed to start in just a week. Has anyone else had to rescind a temp-to-perm offer right before starting? How common is this? And am I missing any subtle red flags with the second offer that would make the first one worth keeping?
