I just experienced a whirlwind of emotions at my job, which was at a tech company where I worked as a project coordinator. Recently, we went through layoffs, and it was a chaotic time. My manager, who I can only describe as a dirtbag, decided to resign right after the layoffs. I can't help but feel that she could have saved a lot of jobs if she hadn't been so selfish. She was the worst manager I've ever had, only focused on her own advancement and complaining about her life while ignoring the team's needs. During her time as our manager, she would constantly abuse the unlimited PTO policy, which made it feel like we had a part-time manager. When she was around, she was condescending and often distracted, screaming at her kids during calls and showing no real interest in the team's progress. Her ethical violations, like making backdoor hiring offers to friends, went unchecked because she was good at sucking up to leadership. When the layoffs hit, my role was impacted, along with a few others. It was frustrating to see her leave the company without facing any consequences while we were left to deal with the fallout. It felt like she was just waiting to see how things played out before submitting her resignation, all while knowing she had a safety net thanks to her wealthy spouse. Now, several of us are left without jobs, while she walks away unscathed. It's disheartening to think that leadership will likely use this situation to justify hiring backfill at lower salaries instead of bringing us back. This whole experience has left me feeling angry and disillusioned with the corporate world. It seems like no matter how hard we work, those in power can manipulate the system to their advantage, leaving the rest of us to suffer the consequences.
