Today, I had a conversation with my manager at the large health insurance company where I'm currently working as a Data Analyst contractor through a small staffing agency. I've just completed my initial 6-month contract, and they want to extend my position, which is great news since I really enjoy working with the team and appreciate the fully remote setup. However, my expenses have significantly increased recently, especially since the agency doesn't provide health benefits, and I'm paying for my own medical insurance. Currently, I'm earning $43 per hour, but I'm considering asking for a rate adjustment to $49 per hour to help cover these rising costs. I have five years of experience in this field, and I feel like I have some leverage since my manager expressed a desire to keep me on board. In my previous contract role, I waited too long to ask for a raise, and while I did eventually get one, it was a risky move that led to a layoff when the project was eliminated. Given this experience, I want to be proactive this time around. I’m curious if anyone has insights on whether small staffing agencies can accommodate a rate increase like this without jeopardizing my contract extension. I want to make sure I approach this the right way before reaching out to my recruiter. Any advice from fellow contractors or recruiters would be greatly appreciated!
