I've been actively searching for a new role and recently had an interview scheduled that got rescheduled. I understand that one reschedule can happen, but when it becomes two or three, it raises some red flags for me. I had a situation where a manager got pulled into something urgent and another interviewer was traveling, which I initially thought was just typical scheduling chaos. However, I’ve learned to pay attention to the pattern of rescheduling. If they reschedule once and provide a concrete replacement time, I consider it a normal mishap. But if it keeps happening and the language around the rescheduling becomes vaguer, it usually indicates that things are drifting on their end. It could mean issues with headcount, a hiring manager who isn't pushing the process, or perhaps they are still evaluating other candidates. I've been noting the following signs: a single reschedule with a clear new time is fine; multiple reschedules with less clear communication is concerning; and hearing 'we'll circle back' after they seemed eager just a week prior is a definite warning sign. I try not to panic over one change, but I also don’t pause my job search just because they seemed excited at first. It’s important to keep my options open.
