Navigating Job Search Frustrations as a Software Engineer in Toronto

I’ve been jobless since November 2024, and it’s been a tough journey. I’m a 27-year-old software engineer based in Toronto, and my husband, who is 33, has been on employment insurance since he was laid off. He graduated from the University of Toronto and worked on contracts for about five years before losing his job. Since then, he’s been actively searching for new opportunities but has only managed to secure three interviews, none of which progressed beyond the second round. I’m feeling confused and frustrated. Is he not qualified enough? Is he not applying consistently? Or is the job market really that bad? I’ve seen comments from others who are also struggling, and it seems like the economy is in a tough spot. Some suggest that the software engineering field is declining and that he might need to pivot to something like AI. Others say he should be more aggressive in his job search and connect with recruiters directly. I just hope he catches a break soon.
