Today marked my first interview since being laid off from my role at a tech company after 15 years of steady employment. I’ve been grappling with how to navigate discussions about my recent layoff during interviews. I’ve heard mixed advice, with some suggesting I should avoid the topic unless directly asked. This morning's interview felt promising; I focused on showcasing how my skills and experiences aligned with the job requirements without dwelling on my past employment status. However, at the end of the interview, I was asked when I could start, and I mentioned I could give a two-week notice. Then they inquired if I was still with my previous employer, and I explained that I was laid off due to circumstances beyond my control. I can't shake the feeling that I might have undermined my chances by not addressing the layoff earlier in the conversation. I have three more interviews lined up this week, and I'm contemplating whether to stick with my current strategy or be more upfront about the layoff from the start. I’m feeling a bit deflated and overthinking my approach. I hope to find a balance that feels authentic while also addressing the realities of the job market.
