I recently went through a nerve-wracking reference check process while applying for a new role at a company that I was really excited about. After only applying to a few positions, I found myself as a finalist for a job that would be a logical advancement in my career, come with a decent pay bump, and allow me to relocate to my top choice of location. I even received a verbal offer during my last interview, which had me thrilled. However, things took a stressful turn when the recruiter reached out to me on a Friday afternoon, asking for four references within just 24 hours. I quickly realized that I needed more time to reach out to potential references and ensure they were willing to vouch for me. Thankfully, the recruiter was understanding and allowed me to submit the references by noon on Monday. When Monday rolled around, I had only heard back from one person out of the five I reached out to. I was worried that I might not meet the deadline, so I contacted the recruiter again to request an extension until the end of the day. To my relief, she agreed, and I managed to get four references lined up just in time. The reference process was intense, requiring each of my references to fill out a thirty-question survey about my skills and experience, answer short questions, and be ready for a phone call. Given that I only have about a year of experience directly related to the job and didn’t want to ask my current boss for a reference, I felt limited in my options. I was convinced that I might lose the offer due to the pressure of the situation. In the end, I received the official offer a few hours ago, and they offered me the top of the salary range right from the start! I’m over the moon, but I definitely learned my lesson about being proactive with references in the future. Has anyone else experienced such a demanding reference process?
