I recently faced my fourth layoff in just four years, which has been incredibly challenging. As I start looking for my next opportunity, I'm considering negotiating for non-discretionary bonuses and guaranteed severance in my offer letter. However, I'm aware that this might be a tall order, especially since I'm not applying for executive-level positions. I've received some feedback suggesting that such requests could be seen as unrealistic and might even jeopardize my chances of receiving an offer altogether. It seems like these kinds of negotiations are typically reserved for higher-level roles, and I might be viewed as a difficult candidate if I push too hard. I'm also thinking about focusing on negotiating the signing bonus instead, particularly ensuring that any repayment terms don't apply if I'm laid off. Given my recent history, that seems like a more practical approach.
