I've been reflecting on the current job market and how it affects my generation, Gen Z. Growing up, we were taught that if we followed a certain path—getting good grades, attending a reputable university, landing a solid job, and being a dedicated worker—we would eventually achieve a comfortable life. This was our social contract, a promise that hard work would lead to success. However, with the recent layoffs and economic instability, it's clear that this contract is being broken. Even if you do everything right, job security is no longer guaranteed. I've been fortunate enough not to experience a layoff yet, as I have a job lined up that hasn't started, but I can't shake the anxiety of what might happen next. It's a tough realization that even those of us who have put in the effort can still face uncertainty. This situation has led many of my peers and me to rethink what success means. We're starting to prioritize healthy relationships, community well-being, and our own mental and physical health over traditional markers of success like promotions or financial stability. I truly sympathize with those who have lost their jobs; I've worked hard to secure my position, and I know how challenging this journey can be. The landscape is changing, and it feels like we need to redefine our goals and what it means to lead a successful life.
