Navigating emotions after layoffs at my company of four years

I just experienced layoffs at my company, where I've worked for the past four years. Before the pandemic, it was a thriving place, but we went through some significant cuts during that time. I joined as a new hire when things started to improve, working alongside two long-tenured colleagues in my department. One of them has been with the company for over 20 years. Recently, I had been anxious about potential layoffs since our only client filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy a few months ago. They had a restructuring plan, which allowed us to continue working, but then we lost some of their business. I felt that layoffs were imminent. I was bracing myself to be let go, considering I was the last one hired. Surprisingly, it was one of my coworkers who was laid off, not the one with the longest tenure. I'm feeling really upset about this. My laid-off coworker is older than me and was very close friends with the other colleague. I can't imagine going to work and not feeling the sadness of this situation. I'm confused, scared, and sad. I lost faith in the company because it feels like there's no loyalty to employees. I was actually out sick when the layoffs happened, and I dread going back to work tomorrow, knowing that my coworker and I will likely just be upset and cry together.
