It’s been about three months since I was laid off from my full-time job in the tech sector, which was a decent position despite the long commute. I've only worked two full-time jobs in my life, one back in 2024 and the other last year before the layoff. To save money, I moved back in with my parents, and while we have a good relationship, I can sense their worry about my job situation. They don’t speak English fluently, so I help them with translations for doctor appointments and other matters. They just want me to be self-sufficient, but this layoff was out of my control. Fortunately, I’ve managed to keep a part-time on-call job that pays $18 an hour, giving me around 20 hours a week. It’s not much, but it allows me to have mornings free for job hunting and attending career fairs. My current role involves restocking items and assisting customers, which feels like a step back in my career. I studied business in college, but I have a passion for technology, like building keyboards. However, I’m not sure how to turn that hobby into a career. I’ve only had a few interviews in the past three months, and my parents are understandably worried about my financial situation. I’ve considered gig work like Uber Eats or DoorDash, but I’m hesitant due to gas prices and the wear and tear on my car. I could really use some advice on how to reassure my parents about my job search and what other steps I can take to improve my situation.
