I’ve been working at a tech company as a sales enablement specialist for two years, and I’m at my breaking point. Despite receiving praise and recognition, there’s been zero opportunity for upward mobility. I finally got a small raise at the beginning of this year, but it still puts me on the same pay level as a much younger colleague who admits to doing less work than I do. From day one, I’ve been eager to transition into an SDR/BDR role. I’ve taken every opportunity to learn about the sales process and have worked closely with Account Executives on major client projects. When the current SDR went on maternity leave for five months, I handled both her responsibilities and my own. My bosses have repeatedly assured me that they want to promote me to an SDR/BDR position, but each time, I’ve been left disappointed. Last year, after presenting my case for a raise, one of my bosses agreed that I deserved it but said I needed to be promoted first. I worked hard, but when the new year came, I received only a 3% raise and no promotion. I was promised additional pay for covering the SDR role, but after one month, I only received a minimal bonus that barely amounted to a raise. Recently, leadership announced plans to create new BDR roles, and I thought this would finally be my chance. However, after two years of being told to trust the process, my boss admitted there’s no clear path from Sales Enablement to BDR. I’d be competing against external candidates who already have SDR/BDR experience, and I’m not feeling optimistic about my chances. I’m incredibly frustrated and feel like the company is taking advantage of me. I’ve even taken on a second job just to make ends meet because my pay has been significantly lower than my coworkers. My partner got tired of hearing me complain about my job, and now I’m dealing with high blood pressure due to the stress and anxiety this job has caused me. I’ve lost 10 pounds in the last three months, and I’m exhausted. I’m reaching out for advice because I can’t continue like this. If this is the best the job market has to offer, I might as well go back to waiting tables.
