I spent the last two weeks tracking around 100,000 job postings on various companies' career sites, and the results were quite surprising. I initially thought that older job postings would be the ones that disappeared first, but it turned out to be the opposite. In fact, 36.5% of jobs posted within the last week were taken down within two weeks, while only 15.7% of jobs that had been up for a month or longer were removed. This was a bit of a revelation for me, especially since I once received a rejection just 26 hours after applying to a job, which was still listed on the site at that time. Interestingly, I found that when jobs are taken down, they sometimes come back as new postings. About 18% of the jobs that disappeared were reposted by the same company with the same title and location, often on the same day. This means that if you applied for an older job that got removed, your application might still be in the system under the previous listing. I also learned that job postings labeled as 'urgent' or 'immediate hire' aren't necessarily newer than others. In fact, 34.6% of these so-called urgent jobs had been listed for over 60 days, which is quite similar to the overall percentage of older postings. One key takeaway from my tracking was that if a company pulls down a significant number of job postings in one day, there's a higher chance that other jobs from that company will also be removed shortly after. In companies that took down 10 or more jobs in a single day, 27.8% of their remaining listings were pulled down within the next nine days, compared to only 11% in other companies. Based on this experience, I would recommend applying to jobs in their first week of posting, not to overlook older listings, and to keep an eye on the company's career page for any reposted positions after you apply. I'm curious to know if anyone else has experienced a job they applied for disappearing quickly or coming back under a new listing.
