Deciding on a CTO Offer at a Startup: Balancing Experience and Salary

I was laid off back in March and have been searching for a new job since January. After six months of looking for both remote and on-site positions, I’m struggling to find something that matches my expected salary. Recently, I received an offer for a CTO position at a startup led by a CEO I’ve previously worked with for six years. The startup is established but has mainly junior and mid-level engineers. The role would involve managing teams and making technical decisions, particularly in Generative AI and Agentic AI projects, which I’ve only explored through personal projects so far. The catch is that the offered salary is only half of what I was earning as a Software Architect, which was more akin to a Senior Full Stack Engineer role. The CEO is asking for a verbal commitment of at least one year. I’m torn between accepting this opportunity to gain managerial experience and continuing my search for a better-paying remote job as a Software Architect or Full Stack Engineer. With 16 years of experience, I’m eager to move into management, and this salary would cover my expenses. Should I take the plunge and accept this role or hold out for something better?
