Navigating Job Interviews After Layoff: My Experience and Concerns

I recently went through a challenging experience at my previous job where I was let go due to performance issues. The constant changes in metrics and processes made it hard for me to keep up, and it ultimately took a toll on my mental health. When I was finally let go, I felt a sense of relief. After that, I spent over a year searching for a new role, and during that time, I often found myself in phone screens and interviews. In my first interview post-layoff, I was trying to navigate the conversation carefully. When the recruiter asked if I was part of a force reduction, I said yes, even though I was technically fired. I was hesitant to admit that I was let go for performance issues because I’ve read advice suggesting that it’s best to avoid that detail. Now, I’m left wondering if my response will come back to haunt me, especially since I’m interviewing with a bank that might have strict compliance standards regarding employment history. I’ve seen mixed opinions on this topic, but I’m hoping that being vague about my termination won’t create issues down the line.
