I was laid off from a major bank after less than a year in my role. The reason given was "restructuring," but I have my doubts about that. I did receive a generous severance package, which suggests I wasn’t let go for cause. The bank had announced layoffs a few months prior to my departure, but I did my best every day at work. I can’t shake the feeling that one senior team member may not have liked me, possibly because I was the new person on the team, older than most of my colleagues, and I don’t have a family. I wonder if I’m just being paranoid about that. It’s frustrating because I had the option to stay at my previous job, which offered me a different role, but I left for a small raise and ended up with worse benefits. Thankfully, I found a new job fairly quickly, but the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I’m left questioning if companies really do let people go simply because they don’t fit in, using terms like "restructuring" as a cover.
