I recently had my first interview for a sales role, and it was quite an eye-opener. I expected to discuss the actual skills required for the position, but instead, only about 5% of the conversation focused on that. The majority of the interview revolved around behavioral questions, like "Tell me about a time when you faced a challenge and how you handled it" or "What would your manager say about you?" It felt more like a storytelling contest than a job interview. Unfortunately, I didn't get the job because I struggled to answer their questions in a way that resonated with them. This experience made me realize that landing a job often hinges more on how well you can connect with the interviewers and present yourself rather than just your skills or capabilities. I understand that in sales, communication and storytelling are crucial, but it was frustrating to see how little emphasis was placed on actual job-related skills. It seems like you need to be liked and able to answer the questions in a specific way to succeed in the interview process. Overall, it was a disappointing experience, but it taught me a lot about the interview dynamics in the sales industry.
