Navigating the Pain of Losing My Role at a Disability Advocacy Non-Profit

I was let go from my dream job at a disability advocacy non-profit on the final day of my FMLA leave. This situation is particularly painful and ironic because I was working to support individuals with disabilities while facing my own health challenges. I have a connective tissue disorder and an autoimmune disorder, which led to serious complications that went undiagnosed for years. My health has always impacted my work, and I've encountered ableism in various roles, but this experience stands out as the most egregious. I started my position in September 2025, initially part-time, but was pressured to switch to full-time within two months due to the organization's needs. Despite my concerns about my health, I felt I had no choice but to comply. As my health deteriorated, I began experiencing severe symptoms, including vision changes and cognitive impairments. After multiple ER visits and a misdiagnosis, I was finally diagnosed with elevated intracranial pressure, which required urgent medical intervention. I went on FMLA leave, reassured by my boss that I would be welcomed back after my recovery. However, during my leave, I faced a medical emergency that required immediate surgery. After my surgery, my neurologist cleared me to return to work part-time, but I was still managing ongoing symptoms. When I communicated my situation to HR and my boss, I received an email on the last day of my FMLA stating that my request for accommodations was deemed an undue hardship for the company. They claimed that the position was originally full-time and that they couldn't wait indefinitely for my return. There was no discussion or negotiation; I was simply informed that I was considered to have resigned. The head of HR highlighted how generous they were for providing 12 weeks of paid leave, which felt disingenuous since they were legally obligated to do so. Today, I collected my belongings from the office. My boss expressed sadness about the situation, but I told her that the handling of my termination was incredibly disappointing. I would have been willing to work with them to find a solution, but I was dismissed without any real consideration. This experience has left me feeling frustrated and hurt, especially coming from an organization that advocates for disability rights.
