Navigating the Challenges of Being Laid Off as an IT Teacher

I’ve officially joined the ranks of the laid-off. I was working remotely as an IT teacher for a non-profit, but due to ongoing funding issues, my position was eliminated. On Monday, we received an email indicating that five roles would be cut, with those affected to be notified on Wednesday. However, I was unexpectedly pulled into a one-on-one meeting today, and my gut feeling was confirmed—I was one of the layoffs. My background primarily includes teaching and holding IT certificates, but I don’t have a bachelor’s degree. I opted for an associate's instead, prioritizing hands-on experience over accumulating debt. Now, I find myself at a crossroads. I will receive severance and need to file for unemployment, but I’m uncertain about my next steps. Interestingly, a recruiter reached out to me for a position just two hours before I got the news, so there’s a glimmer of hope there. I’ve always had unconventional needs, especially with my bipolar disorder, and the remote work setup was beneficial for my mental health. I know I can’t afford to be picky, but this situation is really weighing on me. To add to the complexity, I’ve been dealing with personal issues that have left me feeling lost and questioning my identity. It’s strange—people from my past have started reaching out unexpectedly, which adds to the weirdness of it all. If I can’t secure a new job before my severance and unemployment run out, I’m not sure what I’ll do. My family struggles financially and lives far away, and I’ve always been seen as the ‘successful’ one. The thought of having to start over and potentially move in with a friend feels humiliating, especially considering how proud I was to achieve this level of independence given my family's circumstances.
